Global Diplomacy and the BRICS Summit

At the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s strategic priorities, focusing on four foundational pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. Addressing the assembly, the Prime Minister flagged serious concerns regarding the “weaponisation of technology and critical minerals,” warning that such trends could obstruct global progress. He further characterized the evolution of BRICS as a “win-win collaboration” that has successfully transformed a shared vision into tangible cooperation.

The summit saw the adoption of the “New Delhi Declaration,” in which BRICS leaders voiced collective apprehension over the “growing risks” of nuclear danger and conflict. On the sidelines, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres commended India’s mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine. While acknowledging that the Security Council currently faces paralysis, Guterres maintained that the UN remains a vital institution. Additionally, a consensus was reached on the BRICS Early Warning System to enhance global responses to infectious diseases. From a regional perspective, Chinese media representatives at the summit noted that strengthening India-China ties remains strategically vital for the Global South.
