Political Unrest and Electoral Mobilization

A wave of political demonstrations has swept across major Indian cities, primarily targeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. In New Delhi, police detained hundreds of protesters at Jantar Mantar, including members of student organizations such as AISA, SFI, and NSUI, who are demanding the CEC’s resignation. Parallel protests occurred in Chennai, where the “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) alleged “corrupt and illegal actions” by the CEC.

In Haryana, the CJP reported that several volunteers were detained without notice ahead of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s visit to Hisar. The detentions followed the party’s support for students protesting the Common Eligibility Test.

On the electoral front, the Congress party has announced five candidates for the upcoming Bihar MLC polls, even as its ally, the RJD, remains in the fray for three of those seats. In Karnataka, the political climate remains tense as the BJP challenged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to substantiate his “Form 7” allegations or resign. Meanwhile, in Kerala, the IUML has dismissed claims by Adoor Prakash that the state government excluded the UDF from key decision-making processes, asserting that bilateral talks remain the standard for alliance operations.

Policy Expansions and Administrative Reforms

State governments are moving forward with significant welfare and administrative updates. The Andhra Pradesh government has officially raised the Dearness Allowance (DA) for employees from 37.31% to 41.86% of basic pay. While the increase is reflected in the September salaries, the substantial arrears—ranging from ₹1.23 lakh to ₹11.07 lakh—are scheduled to be paid in phases through 2028.

In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the “Vettri Payanam Thittam,” an expansion of the existing “Magalir Vidiyal Payanam” scheme. The initiative broadens the scope of free bus travel for women. To mark the launch on Gandhi Jayanti, the Chief Minister traveled by bus in Chennai and symbolically handed out tickets to passengers.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is also intensifying its efforts toward voter inclusivity. A special drive has been initiated in Tamil Nadu to enroll first-time and left-out electors. In Telangana, the ECI reported receiving 8.38 lakh claims and objections during its Special Summary Revision (SSR), with over 4.43 lakh applications for fresh enrollment.

Judicial Oversight and Public Infrastructure

The judiciary has intervened in several high-profile administrative and legal matters. The Kerala High Court has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to ensure basic facilities for Sabarimala pilgrims at Erumely, ordering the appointment of a Deputy Collector to coordinate services and resolve devotee grievances.

In Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court granted pre-arrest bail to a Pune Tehsildar in connection with the Mundhwa land deal. During the proceedings, the court questioned whether Parth Pawar had benefited from the transaction.

To accommodate the upcoming Puja and Deepavali festival season, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) announced special inter-state services. These additional buses will connect major hubs like Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Chennai with various destinations across Kerala.

National Milestones and Cultural Reflections

India’s scientific and sporting achievements have taken center stage this week. Dr. G.P. Talwar, a founding faculty member of AIIMS New Delhi and developer of the world’s first leprosy vaccine, was celebrated as he reached the age of 100. In sports, the final tally of Indian medallists from the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games has been released, highlighting a broad spectrum of success across multiple disciplines.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, national discourse turned toward the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Reports indicate that while Gen Z continues to engage critically with his views, his core ideas remain a point of resonance and debate among India’s youth.
